Arthur O’Shaughnessy was a British poet and herpetologist. He published his first collection, Epic of Women, in 1870 and followed it up with another collection two years later, and then another two years after that. His last volume, Songs of a Worker, was published posthumously.
‘Ode’ or ‘We are the music makers’ was written in 1873, and it has nine full stanzas, where the first three are the most commonly quoted. This poem celebrates the energy and the spirit of the Victorian era.
We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams; —
