Carolyn Wells was an American poet who lost her hearing in her youth and went on to publish more than seventy-five mystery/detective stories. Her study of the genre, Technique of the Mystery Story, is one of her most famous works. She also wrote poetry and stories for young readers.
‘Fate’ by Wells humorously explores star-crossed lovers’ trope, suggesting true love’s power or mocking its unrealistic portrayal.
