Delmore Schwartz was an American poet born in 1913 in Brooklyn, New York. He spent time at Columbia University and the University of Wisconsin. He received a BA from New York University. His best-known work is a short story titled “In Dreams Begin Responsibility.” He also wrote collections of verse.
Delmore Schwartz’s ‘Baudelaire’ is an emotional depiction of a poet’s desperation caused by poverty and the vicious cycle of hopelessness.
When I fall asleep, and even during sleep,
I hear, quite distinctly, voices speaking
Whole phrases, commonplace and trivial,
Having no relation to my affairs.
‘The Heavy Bear Who Goes With Me’ by Delmore Schwartz is the poet’s best-known piece. It explores the division between the mind and body.
