Eva Picková was born in Nymburk on May 15, 1929, and later deported to Terezin in 1942. She died in the Auschwitz concentration camp when she was twelve years old. In her only known poem, ‘Fear,’ she writes about typhus in the ghetto she was forced to live in. It alludes to the broader danger she was in while also exploring her personal experience.
‘Fear’ by Picková captures the harrowing reality of life in the ghetto during the Holocaust, confronting death and hopes for survival.
Today the ghetto knows a different fear,
Close in it grip, death weilds an icy scythe.
An sickeness spreads a terror in its wake,
The victims of its shadow weep and writhe.
