Harriet Maxwell Converse, born in 1836 in Elmira, New York, was of Scottish and Irish heritage. An accomplished folklorist, poet, and historian, she had a deep connection with the Native Americans, Iroquois, especially the Seneca. By the late 19th century, she emerged as a fervent advocate for their rights, assisting them in land retention and cultural preservation. Recognizing her efforts, the Seneca inducted her into their tribe, bestowing upon her the honorary position of Sachem or chief of the Six Nations.
