Henry Reed was a British poet who also worked as a journalist, radio dramatist, and translator. His best-known and most commonly read collection is Lessons of War. It contains parodies of army basic training from World War II. Some of these poems were also taught and are today in schools.
Reed’s ‘Morning’ contrasts an idyllic painting with life’s reality, yearning for a peaceful existence with his love, free from the past.
‘Naming of Parts’ by Henry Reed is an ironic poem dealing with the nomenclature of several parts of the Enfield rifle. This poem was published in 1952, in the New Statesman and Nation magazine.
