Jimmy Santiago Baca is an American poet. His youth was tumultuous and included time in prison in the 1970s for drug charges. It was there that he first started writing poetry. His first book was semi-autobiographical titled Martin and Meditations on the South Valley. He also published essays and a screenplay.
‘Who Understands Me but Me’ by Jimmy Santiago Baca is about the poet’s prison experience, showing his hardships and isolation, but ultimately finding inner strength and self-discovery.
they have changed me, and I am not the same man,
they give me no shower, so I live with my smell,
they separate me from my brothers, so I live without brothers,
who understands me when I say this is beautiful?
‘I Am Offering this Poem’ by Jimmy Santiago Baca taps into what most lovers of poetry probably already know, that poetry supplies spiritual and emotional sustenance to humankind. It was published in 1979 in “Immigrants in Our Own Land.”
I am offering this poem to you,
since I have nothing else to give.
