John Bunyan was a 17th century English writer. He’s remembered as the author of The Pilgrim’s Progress. Much of his writing was expanded into sermons. His first work was published in 1656, and it was followed by forty-two other works during his lifetime. A few more were published after his death.
Bunyan’s ‘On the Horse and His Rider’ uses horse-riding as a metaphor for life’s journey, exploring human nature.
There's one rides very sagely on the road,
Showing that he affects the gravest mode.
Another rides tantivy, or full trot,
To show much gravity he matters not.
