Keith Douglas was an English poet who died in 1944. He served in the Second World War and his memoir Alamein to Zem Zem is an important chronicle of the Western Desert campaign. His poetry was inspired by the world around him, something that has resulted in it being described as cold or callous by critics. For others, his poems, such as ‘Desert Flowers,’ are some of the best examples of World War II poetry.
‘Vergissmeinnicht’ is about English soldiers returning to the scene of a battle fought three weeks previously and find the dead body of a German soldier.
Three weeks gone and the combatants gone
returning over the nightmare ground
we found the place again, and found
the soldier sprawling in the sun.
