Lucy Terry Price was an early American settler and poet who was kidnapped and enslaved in Rhode Island in 1730. Her husband purchased her freedom and she wrote ‘Bar Fight,’ a ballad, in 1746. It was published in 1855 after being remembered orally for more than 100 years. The poem details an attack on white families by Native Americans.
